Make a Green Choice an Increasing Profit Choice.
August 29, 2019
I sometimes come across people who regard improving operations to reduce environmental impacts as a bit of a crusade. After all, we are in business to make money which generates income and pays wages to keep us safe and fed.
On a recent stay in a Chicago hotel, I had the option to “Make a Green Choice” by forgoing full housekeeping. As the photo of the door hanger shows, I was informed how much water, energy and cleaning product this would save. I was even offered a small reward for making this choice. This is a really innovative way of a business communicating how customer choices and behaviour could reduce operational environmental impacts. Needless to say, I loved it. Much as I like to be pampered, I don’t really need daily room cleaning when I am staying in a hotel.
This “Green Choice” offer is not just good environmental practice, it is also an “Increasing Profit Choice”. By allowing me to opt out of the full housekeeping service, I am saving the business the need to consume cleaning products. I am saving the cost of heating water for washing towels and bedding. And I am also saving the labour cost required for providing that full housekeeping service.
By doing the right thing for the environment, this business is also doing the right thing for their turnover and profits. And they have won a new fan who will look to stay with them when I can.
So from now on, every time you think about how your organisation improve environmental performance, have a think about how this could also be improving your business’s profits. Not really an environmental crusade – just damn good business practice.
